Zyra Borbon, the first Miss Teen Sagada, went on to compete and became Miss Mountain Province 2004. Zyra is the third Miss Mountain Province from Sagada. Miss Mountain Province 2003 is Karen Wendy Brett and Miss Mountain Province 2002 is Lourdes Mhae Cayatoc. They all underwent the rigid training prepared by the Sagada Segment for them.

In February 2003, the core member of the group successfully coordinated the Mutya ng Santa Maria and was able to raise funds for the student development fund of Saint Mary's School.

Members of the organization also include the same individuals who staged the Mutya ng Montanosa 2000 in Bontoc, a forerunner of the Miss Mountain Province search that was institutionalized in 2001. Even the natural world portrays it in the most unique manners which words themselves cannot fully explain; such as: the flowers in the grassland speaking of its splendid colors, the waves of the ocean displaying its mighty strength, the moonlit of the night conveying its quietude, the laughter of the infants communicating its virtue, the graceful move of the gentle clouds portraying its tenderness, and the solid ray of the golden sun revealing its glory bestowed on every created thing. Beauty is a power that any living individual would pursue to understand and captivate.

Where does beauty really find its truest sense? In the glimpse of a smile or in the twinkling of an eye? On the perfection of an outward form or on the quality of its internal components? On the richness of a speech or on the velocity of a mind? On the deepest of the soul or in the fullness of the heart?

Beauty is not a thing where we can fully establish a certain standard for its existence. It’s a matter that finds itself within the hearts of men. It’s never complete in parts except when finally, all its components are properly assembled and fitted to accomplish its purpose.

As human beings, we are composed of five most important elements that will eventually create who we are: physical, emotional, social, mental and spiritual. Having wholeness and harmony among all of these will mean beauty finally captivated and embraced.

Physically, being complete and beautiful in body parts does not refer to a physical excellence achieved. It is only when these body parts are used on their definite purposes that they gain self-value as a whole. As a fact, physical well being and fitness exercised to attain a higher rate of productivity and efficiency, for the welfare of the person and others would itself expose a physical ability to be beautiful.

Emotionally, having a strong personality is not fully based on how a person surpassed numerous trials, temptations, failures, pain or even sorrow. It is exceedingly necessary that a person develop within him characters that are highly commendable to God and to people. As quoted in Galatians 5:22, “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, humility and self-discipline.” It is therefore important to inscribe these within us in our pursuit to develop a strong emotional character.

Socially, it’s not on how many our friends or how well established our families and communities are that assures realization of social value. It is in the sincerity of the heart to serve people that we truly find inner satisfaction provided by a good social life. Beauty in this part is in our genuine passion to share our lives with others.

Mentally, wisdom is: neither on how high nor deep our ideas are; how countless the facts that we have learned; how material the degrees that we have earned. It is simply on how we decide to do what is right from what is wrong. Mental beauty is not only a matter of thought and brain but is a matter of action and application of what is absolutely correct and good.

As a whole, beauty in its truest sense is on having a well-balanced personality fit for the purpose to live a life to its fullest. Such as that a man himself will not look into only one aspect to determine beauty, but to consider all what it takes to get the best out of it. In this affair, captivating beauty is not just a matter of defining and comprehending it, but of choosing to develop it within for the benefit of a lifetime.

It's not what you see

Karen Wendy Brett

Girls definitely dream to be anything but ordinary in this world where physical appearances tend to be the boss. Such dreams may include being the prettiest girl in the classroom, the most popular girl in the campus, or even the reigning queen.

As a typical girl, I do have many dreams. But these dreams never included having a crown set on my head for winning a beauty pageant. I had always regarded beauty pageants as fitted only for girls with perfect smiles, gorgeous bodies and striking faces. They were intended for girls who had the confidence to show a bit of flesh and worm their way to the judges’ approval and the crowd’s appreciation.

Fate had other plans. Somehow I got myself entangled in a whirlwind of all that girlish stuff. And naïve as I was, I found making all those fancy walks and wearing glamorous dresses and high – I do mean very high! – heels on stage very thrilling and challenging. Yet with all the touches of class and sophistication, I had to stop and think if I was still my own self.

Perhaps, there was something more to this. Supposedly, in every beauty pageant, the interview or question and answer part is the most dreaded portion since one may end up finding herself at a loss for words. Definitely, a stutter of irrelevant replies is a major turn-off after showing how fantastic one was with her walk and dresses and smiles.

But this was where I felt comfortable. At last, I was given the chance to express myself and prove to the spectators that I was not but a package of vital statistics and a dazzling face. I brought out what had been bubbling within me after minutes of having nothing to do but prance around the stage with a winning smile while thinking all the time that what I really wanted to do was fling off the heavy shoes that had been hurting my ankles! I spoke and gladly found out I was still myself.

That event taught me a lot. I’ve gotten a deeper perspective of womanhood now. It is certainly not about how gorgeous one is with a very fashionable dress – it is far more than this. Rather, even more than the eloquence of voicing out the fantastic ideas spinning in one's head is the quality that blossoms from the depths of her being. Nothing can outshine the beauty from within. And nothing can ever outweigh the purpose these talents in display. It's not to show-off, but to glorify God’s name by using His gifts in the right way.

Honestly, I find it quite awkward to be writing these stuff as if I’ve walked this path so many times. I am still sixteen and have yet so much to learn. I still need a lot of growing up to do to fully understand a woman’s true self – from the depths of her desires to the zenith of her aspirations. However, I really believe that every girl deserves to have a taste of being the people's darling for even a matter of moments.

Thus I can say, we don’t need to be bewitching with our looks. The fact is that we are all beautiful (no matter what others say); we just need a little boosting up to bring this beauty out. Let us charm the people with that definite charisma – it’s how we project our personality with our words. Bear in mind that a head will never be called pretty if a good way of thinking is not paired up with it.

----------
The contributor aspires to be a woman of substance and wishes other girls to do the same. So when she hits the books, guys, think of it as part of her beauty secret.

What I got to prove, what I lost

Lourdes Mhae Cayatoc

Exploitative. Disrespectful. Worthless. Downright dirty. These are a few of the adjectives that we hear whenever a beauty pageant comes to mind. While a lot of us don't know what goes on and what is in a beauty pageant, those who are involved in such events remain victims of our, or someone else's, prejudice.

I for one used to have no appreciation for beauty pageants. In fact, I hated their mere existence. Like the others who stuck out their tongues in disgust as they told stories of how those who participated in such contests lost their integrity, I used to bad-mouth almost every contestant even though I hardly knew any of them.

Then fate intervened and I had to reassess the things I believe in. Someone asked me to join a beauty pageant. I was so reluctant at first. I fought all those who dared to push me into it. I couldn't find myself embracing one of the things I despised.

Then a friend punched me with this line: "You have nothing to prove and nothing to lose. All you have to do is give our faith in you a chance." I was in my usual pouting self, but my pride worked in so right there and then, I decided to take the challenge.

Slowly I began to understand the importance and meaning of what I entered into. I found out that joining a beauty contest is not easy. It takes guts, courage, confidence and assertiveness to be able to qualify. What's more, being beautiful doesn't mean that one can get away that easily into winning the crown. That goes the same with intelligence.

In order to achieve the much coveted crown in a beauty pageant, one must possess all of these qualities -- the synergy of confidence, beauty, grace and intelligence.

So contrary to what many believe, beauty pageants are not useless. These pageants are a venue for young women to build their confidence, hone their talents, face their fears and air out their opinions. Plus, pageants build a solid camaraderie among the candidates -- a relationship bound by strength and tested by the powerful call of excelling over the others, yet giving their best fairly.

I can say that the people behind these shows have good intentions. Not only do they have the guts to show their talents but they have faith in what they do. They want to achieve something. To help. To succeed. To learn. They know that although they may not have excelled in what they did at one time, in a way, they still have shared something.

See, I know that my friend was wrong. In joining a beauty pageant and being crowned a beauty queen, I have proved one thing. I made others and myself believe that there is more in what we see in things if we learn to appreciate them.

And I did lose something: my insecurities, my fears, and most of all, my biases. I have become a better person.
